This part of the book begins with Stanley has dug so many holes so that he has lost track on how many it actually is. As usual, Stanley continued to dig, but this day is a bit special because Stanley finds a golden tube with the initials KB etched inside a heart. He has previously told X-ray that he would give him everything he found so that X-rays could get the rest of the day of. Reluctantly, Stanley gives X-ray the tube. He tells X-ray to wait with giving the tube to the Warden so that X-ray can get a whole day off and not just an hour or so. The next day X-ray gives the tube to the Warden and get the day of. Later that evening, says X-ray to Stanley to move up one place in line so that Zero ended up last again.
The next day when Stanley enters the Wreck room and sees that all the boys are exhausted except for X-Ray, who brags about his day off. In the evening Stanley and Zero started to talk and then Zero tells him that he can’t read. Zero asks him if he could teach him but Stanley said no.
The next day Magenet stole Mr. Sir’s purse with flower seeds. The guys then gave the bag of seeds to Stanley so that all seeds fall out in Stanley’s hole. When Mr. Sir sees it he takes Stanley to see the Warden. Mr. Sir explains that someone stole the sunflower seeds but that he doesn’t think it was Stanley. When Stanley later returned to the field to end his hole, had Zero already done it. Back in the tent, Stanley waits until the other boys have left before thanking Zero for digging his hole. When Stanley asked why he helped, Zero says that Stanley didn’t steal the sunflower seeds. Stanley points out that Zero didn’t steal them either. After this, Stanley offers to teach Zero to read and they work out a deal in which Zero will dig Stanley’s hole for an hour every day so that Stanley won’t be as tired when he teaches Zero.
